Visit the Royal Observatory to find out more about the history of measuring time and the seasons. These events of course are greatly influenced by weather and climate, and so changing climate could cause autumn to start earlier or later than the standard astronomical or meteorological definitions. These cover a range of ecological and biological signs, such as the leaves falling off the trees and the migration of birds to warmer climates. The third way of defining autumn is to use what are known as phenological indicators. On this basis, for most of the northern hemisphere the autumn months are usually September, October, and November. Meteorologicalīy contrast, meteorologists tend to divide seasons into periods of three whole months based on average monthly temperatures, with summer as the warmest and winter as the coldest. However, there is disagreement between those who see the equinox or solstice as the start of the season, and those who hold that it represents the middle of the season. AstronomicalĪstronomically, the four seasons centre around the equinoxes and solstices. I still ended up having fun with the book, just less and different than I had thought I would. There are three main different ways of defining autumn: astronomical, meteorological and phenological. The characters were all rather shallow and the plot super episodic with some serious plot holes. Like I didn’t expect the main character to cuss so much (although that endeared her to me) but I did hope for more character depth and exploration of the found family crew. Here in Brazil we have the same for the Fall. I don’t know if it was the cover or the tagline, but I thought this would be both more lighthearted and deeper, if that makes sense. Googles homepage celebrates the vernal equinox today with a charming animated Google Doodle. The only book I expected to love more was Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes. The two expected 5-star-reads turned out to actually both be 5-star-reads, which is always nice. I also ended up rating most books pretty high. But otherwise, I read exactly what I set out to read and have thus reached a pretty good page count. I did switch my dragon books for short comics because I really, really wanted that licence and didn’t dare risk not finishing the required books in time. It’s funny how the TBR I fully expected to stray from is the one I stuck to almost perfectly. It still counts toward my guild’s pages, so that’s nice. I counted that towards a class I didn’t need for my chosen career. I also listened to the audio version of Elliot Page’s memoir Pageboy because my hold came in from the library. I’m fine with that choice, as I had been meaning to read the Tea Dragon books anyway and they are just as adorable as everyone says! Also, they have amazing representation, especially for a comic book. This is the part where I switched both my planned books for comics, because I wouldn’t have managed to read an additional two 400-page chonkers in August. So it’s nice to have a fictional character who dares to do all those things I’m too afraid of (and also, that are impossible because no dragons on Earth). In addition to the classes, I chose to get my character a dragon riding licence – something that sounds great in theory, but that I would probably be much too chicken to get if dragons were real. This year’s syllabus (linked here on Google Drive) was a lot of fun! I finished all classes at the required level and then a couple of extra ones.
